The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has a responsibility for promoting competitive and sustainable economic development in the agri-food sector. It also has an important regulatory role in food safety, animal and plant health, agri-environment and other matters, principally in implementation of EU legislation. Reporting to the Secretary General, the Head of Rural Development, Forestry and Market Supports will be a member of the Department’s senior management team with overall policy and operational responsibility for major schemes under the Rural Development Programme and forestry. S/he will also manage the operation of EU market support schemes in Ireland. The successful candidate will have: • excellent leadership, management negotiation and organisational skills, with a proven record of signifi cant achievement in the management of large projects; • a proven track record in policy formulation and operational management, and a demonstrable capacity to meet the challenges of this senior management position in an area of such complexity; • the capacity to ensure delivery of policy objectives and to set strategic direction and long-term vision for the Department’s role in the realisation of a competitive and sustainable farming and agri-food sector; • excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to build effective relationships with relevant stakeholders and an ability to operate effectively within the EU and international arena. This is a Top Level Appointments committee (TLAC) position.
